Marquis Hill

From his beginnings as one of Chicago’s most exciting young trumpeters to his current role as an internationally recognized artist, composer, and bandleader, Marquis Hill has built a sound rooted in connection. Jazz, hip-hop, R&B, Chicago house, neo-soul… to Hill, it all comes from the same place. “It’s all from the same tree,” he says, “just different branches.” That mindset runs through his entire catalog. On Modern Flows Vol. II, he blends jazz interplay with hip-hop rhythms and spoken word. On The Way We Play, he reimagines standards through a modern lens. Even before winning the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Competition in 2014, Hill had already carved out a strong presence in Chicago, releasing multiple projects independently and leading his band, the Blacktet. Born and raised on Chicago’s South Side, Hill grew up surrounded by Motown, R&B, and soul before discovering jazz. He studied at Northern Illinois University and DePaul University, developing a voice that draws from the lineage of Miles Davis, Lee Morgan, and Freddie Hubbard while remaining distinctly his own. Now, through constant touring and collaboration, Hill continues to push boundaries. His music reflects a deep respect for tradition while staying grounded in the present—bringing together sound, culture, and community into something that feels unified, intentional, and alive.
